There are lots of reasons to be excited and worried about Annihilation. It is the author director Alex Garland’s follow-up to his enormously praised breakout Ex Machina and its $55m spending budget catapults him into a larger, riskier league, the stakes tremendously higher than before. For his studio funded debut, he is chosen to accommodate Jeff VanderMeer’s award winning novel, packed with visceral terror, thoughts and unusual storytelling. While its fanbase is enthusiastic, it is hard, some state unfilmable, territory and the result has generated problems for Paramount, that was allegedly spooked by test audiences discovering it too intellectual, and complex.

The well trodden formulation of a bunch of experts/soldiers/horny adolescents being chosen by a malevolent force is present, but it is not presented at the same generic package we have grown tired with. Garland has much more on his mind than just how to creatively dispatch a list of ciphers and his movie is wonderfully unknowable, a crackling tension underpinning the inconsistent story. There is an annoying cold about the terror that lies ahead because we are never really certain what kind it’ll take. It’s exceptionally refreshing, and remarkably uncommon, to watch a genre movie which revolves around intelligent characters responding to fantastical events. The team is composed of briskly efficient problem solvers who stay functional and focused while dealing with otherworldly mayhem. Unlike with numerous superficially comparable films.
